Welcome to My Classroom #1

Classroom 2Here is the first in what I hope will be a series of posts on different classrooms. This is my classroom - Room 14!

The red door is there for luck and fortune. Red is the luckiest colour in Chinese culture.

I’m so very lucky to have a permanent classroom and not have to move around all the time. I’m also very lucky that it’s a huge room with great natural light and just enough space for the class of 28 highly energetic little ones when they come to visit.

I usually keep the tables in a horseshoe formation mainly because it makes them really easy to move to the side when we need to clear a space in the middle, which is fairly often! Sometimes I change the tables around to facilitate more group work, depending on what we are working on.

You can see some of the kids work on the walls making it bright and the SMART Board at the front. If you look hard enough just near the SMART Board you can see a line of the carpet. That’s as close as the kids are allowed to get to the front when we are using the board, otherwise whoever was trying to get to the board would be trampling a lot of little people in the process. Needless to say I don’t make Year 8 sit right at the front!

You can see the windows that face out into the corridor in the second last picture. I often get the kids to write on the windows with window/chalk textas. They love writing characters over and over again if they can do it on the windows

The last picture is of the ‘ICT’ corner - the four computers lined up in the corner. Only three of them work, but I’m hopefully replacing that one this year! I’d love to have the computers set up diffrerently - maybe each at it’s own station or something like that. But power points and cables prevent that at the moment.

I hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my classroom! I’d love to feature other classrooms here at technoLOTE. If you’d like to share you classroom just email me about 4 photos taken from different angles with a short description and I’ll post them here for the technoLOTE world to see!

  • I am envious!! I have a tiny classroom in a (not so)temporary building. It is so dark inside as well, cold in the Winter and hot in the Summer. But I have done my best to brighten it up. But the advantages are that I have an Interactive Whiteboard, access to the Internet, Sky TV and ample books and magazines to promote Language learning!! We ought to start something about Languages’ classrooms around the world. I may stop moaning!!!

    Jess,
Love the classroom - especially the colours. Looks like it could have been fairly drab without your additions. I’ve taken my camera to work a few times this week (probably could call it last week now) with the intention of taking some snaps but still to do. Will pass some on. Keep up the great work!

What a great room! It’s true of all the language classrooms I’ve ever been in that they are the brightest, liveliest rooms in the high school. I’ll take my camera in next week to add to your collection (can’t guarantee the sun streaming in though as it’s in Manchester, England!)
