Going Around the Bend

Day 79 - f o c u sI don’t want to go on too much about being overwhelmed, busy, overloaded and tired, but I have to every now and again to get  a grip on reality and to talk myself into culling the list of ‘to dos’ and making if more realistic.

It’s so important to really think about which projects / tasks are the ones that I am truly interested in and passionate about and focus on those. At the moment I’m supposed to be writing some units of work for the Dept of Ed, but I just cannot get motivated because writing units like that is not something I am really interested in. I don’t really want to continue working on them (haven’t got that far yet) , yet am reluctant to pull out because of how it will look for me.

I have spent so little time lately writing blog posts and maintaining the fantastic networks I have started to establish because of the crazy start to the year. I’m planning more than just one day ahead at a time, which is better than a week or so ago, but not much more than a day! I want to get so much more focussed and organised and when my planning gets more under control, I want to spend time blogging and networking, not writing units that I can’t put too much ICT into because I can’t assume too much of the people who will be using them.

One of things I wanted to do this year was start living a slower life and say no to things. Have to start somewhere…

  • With your units of work with the Dept of Ed, are you able to incorporate your passion for ICT and web2.0? If you cant, and your heart is not in it, worry only about yourself and not how it looks. Your commitment to teaching and the emerging technologies is an inspiration to those of us who follow you and that is what matters most!!

  • Group hug Jess I totally know how you feel. My natural response to any request is always YES. I’m trying really hard to break this habit. I’ve set my message on GTalk to say Computer says NO to remind myself to remember to say NO as my first response — so I can spend a few days thinking about if it is a good idea to say yes.

Even thinking of changing my computer appearance to a big NO to remind me.

  • Jess -
I feel for you! Hope a weekend off will help you get a better understanding of what you can handle. I also have the habit of saying yes to everything that comes my way and then becoming overwhelmed - I like Sue’s idea that NO should come first :-) I think it says good things about you, though, that you want to tackle so much - you have ambition and that’s always good. Take some time to breathe and make time for blogging if that’s what’s important to you……..

  • No! No! NO!! There are so many teachers and teacher aides in our schools who need to learn to say that. Maybe a screensaver would be a good idea …..lol

But if too many of us said NO, what would happen? Other teachers would have to step up into your shoes - with such a large number of teachers close to retirement age in Australia, there will be plenty of shoes needing filling.
